Crossroads United Presbyterian Church began with new church development funds made available by the Presbytery of Detroit and a special grant from the First United Presbyterian church of Birmingham. The organizing pastor was the Reverend William L. Rieker. The first service of worship was held on October 21,1954, in a remodeled dog kennel. A new church building was formally dedicated on December 6,1957. This is now the flat roofed section of the building. The congregation was officially organized May, 1958, with 77 charter members. Reverend Clark Cowden came to Crossroads in 1991 during the building addition campaign. This addition provided a significantly larger Fellowship Hall and increased classroom space. The following were initiated during his tenure, including a contemporary service in addition to the traditionalservice Christian education classes between the two services including adult classes Walled Lake's largest Banana Split - an evangelism outreach to the community,Monday club for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 held after school and Vacation Bible School held on four consecutive evenings during the summer. The Reverend William Emrich became the interim pastor in January, 1999. He helped maintain the programs as the search for a new pastor was carried out. Hi! my name is Stephen March and along with my wife Sharon and our three sons Benjamin, Joshua and Caleb we are currently in Villy en Auxois in France developing our French language skills and looking to see what 'shape' God wants our lives here to have. Sharon and I met as children when my father went to be the pastor of Kilsyth Congregational Church, an Independent Congregational church which her family attended in Kilsyth, a small town 13 miles Northeast of Glasgow, Scotland. We had a fairly normal upbringing. As Protestant, Evangelicals both our families were very committed to their faith and the church community was the central focus of our families lives. All our parents were very involved with serving in the church - obviously mine were as my father was the Pastor! But Sharon's dad was also a deacon and lay-preacher and her mum the Captain of the Girl's Brigade. As children both Sharon and I made a commitment to Christ and were encouraged in, modelled and taught the Christian faith in our homes. A French Mistress, Oooer! Radiocommunication engineers, sexy we are often not! As adults we embarked upon our respective professional careers - Sharon as a French teacher in Secondary Schools, me as a Radiocommunications Engineer working within the Civil Service. Eventually our stars crossed and we became "romantically linked" and got married in 1986.
Bible study - Good Overcomes Evil provides solutions for the 7 dominant problem areas of life as described in the Bible: Health, wisdom, prophecy, mysteries of God, relating to God, family, and community. The key to Christian success. Self righteousness is one of the most infectious of diseases. It is very easy to rationalize attacking others as defending good and gives a false and shallow sense of satisfaction. It leads to gradual self destruction. It makes us vulnerable to being manipulated. God calls Christians to be a peculiar people in that we should learn to perceive the constant deceptions that surround us. We must focus on solving the real underlying problems, instead of merely attacking the symptoms. The Bible states that if people learn to focus on solving real underlying problems, instead of attacking surface symptoms, then God will guide them continually. This is the key to avoiding the cycle of nations. Gaining a vision of future probable outcomes is also key. But, the Bible describes a veil that obscures our ability to accomplish these goals. This veil is strengthened or weakened by our motives. Without these two abilities, society never faces up to it's real underlying problems, until after the culture is in the process of collapsing. During the millenium, the veil will be removed, and people will perceive the underlying realities, have increased empathy, and have better perception of long term probable outcomes. Perhaps then it will be easier for societies to clearly perceive the steps required to create a balance which will prevent extremes. With better perception of long term outcomes, people may even lose the desire to go to extremes. Until then, we are dependent upon God to honor our feeble but sincere efforts to balance our motives, by preventing us from blindly going to extremes.
