HELP US TO PROTECT AND CONSERVE SCOTLAND?S WILD LAND: The SWLG raises awareness about the importance and value of wild land, SWLG campaigns on the wider political issues, SWLG makes detailed contributions to national and local government proposals, SWLG responds to individual developments, SWLG is a founder member of the Scottish Environment Link. Scottish Wild Land Group works to protect and conserve wild land throughout Scotland, and has campaigned since 1982 on a wide range of issues. SWLG is in favour of sensitive development of rural areas where it is sustainable and takes account of the interests of local communities. SWLG aims to address issues affecting the wild land of Scotland, including its islands. Issues covered in recent years include:- insensitive hydro schemes and wind farms; proliferation of fencing; badly sited telecom masts; construction of bulldozed tracks for sport shooting; superquarries; transport in rural areas; land ownership; funicular railways; protection of the Cairngorms; adverse impact of mechanised downhill ski-ing; degradation of land by deer and sheep grazing; afforestation; access to the hills; fish farming and the marine environment. We aim to push landscape issues much higher up the political agenda. One of the most marked impacts on wild areas is the damage done by development of hill tracks in Scotland?s uplands. The Mountaineering Council of Scotland has recently launched a campaign to call for an overhaul of the uncontrolled rights of landowners to construct these monstrous tracks through our wild areas. New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island), and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, a number of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced. The wagons were located in sheds on a piece of property in the hill country which has been condemned to make way for a new highway. The woman who owns the property wants to remain anonymous for now, said Shelton, but she is determined to save the relics that her father spent much of his life collecting. "I?ve never run across anything like this. It?s the find of a lifetime," said Shelton. ?These are all original. Nobody has done anything to them. They still have the original upholstery.
