The Society is the leading Theatrical Company in the district, St. Giles Pantomime Society . Pontefract, and has been in existence since 1949, delivery first class live entertainment to Pontefract and the surrounding area. When the curtains closed on the final performance in January 2010 of ?The Snow Queen?, St. Giles Pantomime Society had performed it?s 61st annual pantomime all of which have been staged in the Assembly Room at Pontefract Town Hall. The Society was formed in 1949 by the then Vicar of St. Giles Church, The Reverend Jack Peel, (inset) who stated in his article in the 1974 Silver Anniversary programme ?there were many reasons for starting the Pantomimes, the principle being to draw people of all ages and differing abilities into a ?Splendid fellowship? as he called it. It is one of the best clubs you can find. Some people sing, some dance, some play music, but that is not all, you must always remember those who do stage work, stage sound, stage lighting, make costumes, help with make-up, book seats and do the multiple other jobs. There may be a crowd of performers onstage, you can be sure there are just as many behind the scenes?.

Try it - we're sure you'll like it ! We have modern line dancing in South East Essex - fun & friendly. We do a variety of dance styles - without a partner. Most types of music are danced to such as Latin, Pop, Rock & Roll, Disco, Swing, Rock, Soul, Street, Celtic, Country and many more. Dancing solo has been with us for as long as rhythm has and increased in popularity with the rise of line dancing to disco in the 70?s followed later by western country music. With the rise in popularity came dances with choreography to fit other types of music to such an extent that any music with a regular beat can now be danced to. Above all, whatever type of music or dance style our dancers prefer, the most important things are fun and friendship in a social and non-competitive environment for people of all ages.
For all those interested in the history and technique of the British theatre! The Society for Theatre Research has a worldwide membership of individuals and institutions interested in the history and technique of the British theatre. It was formed at a public meeting in the bomb-damaged Old Vic on 15 June 1948 by a bunch of luminaries from both the profession and the fledgling world of theatre research, summoned by the editors of Theatre Notebook, which from its foundation in 1945 had been devoted to this new field: in 1948 there was only one British University theatre department, at Bristol. No less a reporter than George Devine wrote about the new society in Theatre Notebook for January 1949, commenting that 'There is no limit to its possible scope and practical usefulness except that which may be imposed by the indifference of the very people in whose interests it has been founded,' namely the theatre community.
This collection did not start out with any idea of a common theme, nor for that matter of being a collection. It was only after several plays had accumulated, written at irregular intervals as inspiration struck, that a linking thread emerged - the necessity of coming to terms with a wounded past if the future is to have any peace. Some wounds, of course, cannot be healed on this side of the grave. There is no honest way of coming to terms with the unscrupulous ?investigative? journalism represented in "Whitefly," a parable of what has actually happened to the West Cumbrian coast though set in a quite different context. This play, alone of the set, was written with polemic intent and initially for television as the most suitable medium, though not accepted for performance. The television version is given in the "Other fiction" section Royalty-free play and film scripts - A collection of original play and film scripts, stories and some factual material, free of royalties for amateur use.
